2018 MOTHER’S DAY HONOREE – LINDA CAREY
Linda Carey, our 2018 Mother’s Day Luncheon honoree, is a most deserving role model, mother, and grandmother. She has two sons, Burgess and Howard. She lost her beloved daughter, Elizabeth, to a battle with triple negative breast cancer in 2015. She has six beautiful grandchildren to whom she is very close.
Mrs. Carey was one of two women appointed to the first Civic Center Board, which was later renamed the Lexington Center. The Lexington Center developed Rupp Arena, hotel, retail and exhibition space. Mrs. Carey had a guiding hand in this development as she served on the Lexington Center Board for 26 years. When she realized there was no allocation for an onsite arts facility, Mrs. Carey was able to convince the Lexington Center Board to purchase the Opera House. She led the charge as they formed a separate committee to raise $1.5 million to purchase the adjacent laundromat and begin an endowment to support programming in the Opera House.
To say Mrs. Carey is a leader is an understatement. Linda is a visionary. When she identifies the need, she quite capably joins with others to fill the gap. She was a founding member of Lexington Musical Theater; a founding member of the Fellows of the Arts which became Lex Arts; and a founding member of the Opera House Fund. To date, that fund has returned over $10 million to local and professional arts groups through grants and subsidies. She is still active on that board.
Linda has served our community in other capacities. She is a former board member of the Headly-Whitney Museum, Opera Lex, Lexington Children’s Theater, the Junior League of Lexington, the Lexington School, and the Lexington Hearing and Speech Center. She also served on the board of the Lexington Singers, of which she has been a member for over 40 years.
Mrs. Carey is charming, disarming, and gets things done! We are pleased to honor her.
